How to remove wallet scars

Without further ado, I will now introduce to you the "specific method of removing leather scars". First of all, when it comes to scars, there are actually all kinds of scars, and everyone feels scars differently, and so do the types of leather products (such as wallets). Since everyone's situation is different, choose the method that works best for you.

Use fingers and a soft cloth to remove scars

Minor scratches on leather wallets can usually be easily removed by simply wiping them with your fingers or a soft cloth. Some minor scars can be cleaned by wiping them with your fingers or a cloth. When wiping with fingers or a cloth, the color of the wiped area may become slightly darker or become shiny. Since the final result may not be ideal, using your fingers or a cloth to remove the scar should be considered a "temporary emergency measure."

Use a brush and leather repair cream to remove scars [Recommended]

The most recommended method of removing scars is to use a "brush and leather repair cream". Using a brush and repair cream can not only effectively remove scars, but also maintain the leather. This method will not only remove the scratches, but also make the leather more shiny and make the wallet look more stylish.

Let’s explain in detail how to remove scars.
First we need to prepare the following things.

〈Necessary supplies〉

  • horse hair brush
  • leather repair cream
  • soft cloth

Use a brush to remove dust

First, we use a brush to brush the wallet to remove dust and garbage on the wallet.
If you brush carefully, minor scars will become less noticeable at this stage.

We recommend using Colonil’s “Horse Hair Brush” because this brush is not only suitable for wallets, but also for various other leather products, so it is definitely cost-effective to own one.

②Use a soft cloth to wipe the surface

Before applying the repair cream, wipe it with a soft cloth and let the wallet further smoothen the surface.
The ideal fabric to choose for this step is a soft cotton.

It is recommended to use Collonil's "polishing cloth". ※You can also use underwear that you no longer wear as a substitute.

③ Apply a little leather care oil. Use a dry cloth to take an appropriate amount (about 1cm in diameter) of leather care oil, and apply it evenly on the leather in a circular motion.

Rub carefully until the scar becomes less noticeable. After the entire area has been wiped evenly, wait for about 5 minutes to allow the leather care oil to fully penetrate into the leather. The recommended leather care oil is Colonia 1909 Supreme Cream Deluxe. This leather maintenance oil contains superior ingredients such as cedar wood oil and camphor. It is a high-grade nutritional maintenance oil.

④Use a brush to rub the surface.

After applying leather maintenance oil, wait for more than 5 minutes before wiping it for the second time. This time, rub the surface with slightly more force than you did the first time. By rubbing firmly, the scars of the leather will blend in better and a shine will develop.

⑤Wipe the surface after completion.

Finally, wipe with a dry cloth to remove excess maintenance oil and dust. The method introduced above is an effective "scar removal method" for many leather wallets.

Depending on the type of leather, how to treat scars

The aforementioned method is indeed an effective method of removing scars for many leather wallets, but due to the wide variety of leather materials used to make leather wallets, some methods may not be suitable for specific materials. There are roughly three types of leather wallet materials, each with its own unique characteristics. Here we will introduce the characteristics of various leather materials and the most suitable method for dealing with scars.

grease leather

Grease leather is one of the least likely materials to show scars. Since cow leather is rich in oil, minor scratches will gradually mix with the oil during use, and the scars will naturally become less obvious. In fact, in the process of "changing (aging)" of leather products over the years, some minor scratches sometimes make it become more deep and styled, becoming the charm of leather products.

Rather than trying to remove scars, it is better to regard these slight wear and tear as one of the characteristics of leather products and appreciate its beauty that " changes with the years ." Therefore, it is more appropriate to use leather care oil and brush regularly for self-care, rather than just to remove scars.

Cow leather

Nume leather does not contain oil, so it is a very susceptible material to damage compared to oily leather. Its unique feature is that it is susceptible to "aging" due to the influence of sebum and sunlight, allowing you to feel the true flavor of leather. If scratches occur, use leather care cream and a brush to treat them.

Suede

Suede leather (Suede) is the least likely to scratch among the three materials. Even if there are scars, most scars will usually become less noticeable with just a gentle rub with your fingers or a brush, so no further maintenance is required. On the contrary, if you use cream or protective oil, you may lose the unique touch of suede leather, so it is not recommended to use cream or maintenance oil for maintenance.

How to deal with scratches on your genuine leather wallet

When the injury is severe and difficult to heal, you can use repair supplies or ask a professional to assist.

Use a complementary cream or leather manicure

If the leather is cracked or severely injured, you can use a touch-up cream or a leather manicure to make the scar less noticeable. To use it, apply a small amount of product to the damaged area, and then wipe it with a cloth or brush to blend it evenly throughout, making the scratches inconspicuous. However, it may be difficult to adjust the color of this method, so it may only be suitable for wallets of general colors, such as black or camel.

Of course, you can also improve the "color reproduction" by mixing multiple colors, but to be honest, we don't recommend it to those who are unfamiliar with it.

Examples of color replenishing creams: SAPHIR’s “Renovating Color Repair Cream”.

Use everyday products to remove scratches from leather

Postscript in September 2023

If you want to preserve and maintain your leather products for a long time, it is recommended to prepare as many of the tools introduced this time as possible.
Finally, I would like to introduce some simple maintenance methods that can be carried out using daily items.
■ People who want to take care of small leather items, but are hesitant to buy special tools due to the low price of the main body ■ People who want to deal with sudden scratches in an emergency

For such people, I would like to share the following.

Use a toothbrush and hand cream to make leather scars disappear

First, what you need to prepare is:
■ Toothbrush (preferably one with soft bristles)
■ Soft cloth (with lint-free fibers such as underwear)
■Hand cream (such as NIVEA hand cream, etc.)

That's all you need. Let's go through the steps.

  1. Use a toothbrush to scrub the entire damaged area, including the entire surface.

  2. Use a soft cloth to gently wipe the entire surface to remove dirt and dust and leave the surface tidy.

※ If you use a hard toothbrush to scrub, it may damage the leather surface, so please try to use a softer toothbrush and test it in an inconspicuous place※

  1. Take an appropriate amount of hand cream (such as NIVEA , etc.) and apply it carefully with a cloth. Then let it penetrate for about 5 minutes.

  2. Use a toothbrush to scrub the scar until it becomes less noticeable, while using the brush to even out the entire surface.
  3. Finally wipe it with a dry soft cloth and you're done.

Those are all the steps. In fact, the "horse hair brush" introduced in the first half can be replaced by a "soft toothbrush". "Leather Cream" can be replaced with "Hand Cream", it's such a simple maintenance. Since they are made and composed similarly, household items are easy to use for simple care. This method is ideal for emergency response.

Of course, for important items that cannot go wrong, we still recommend using special tools or asking professional operators to perform maintenance. Replacement skin care products are also introduced in the following article

If you are interested, you can refer to it.

If you don’t know what to do, you should ask an expert to fix it.

If the injury is difficult to handle on your own, it is recommended to seek help from professionals such as a professional leather product repair shop. Although this is a last resort, it is more reassuring than unfamiliar self-care methods. Experienced professionals can deal with it through repair methods such as "repainting" or "using special resin to fill the wound". Even wounds that were previously considered irreparable may be made less conspicuous. Usually, there are many shops in Japan that offer such repair services for around 5,000 yen (NT$1,200).

Even if there are "hard-to-remove scars" on the wallet, if you ask a professional to repair it, it may be restored to its original state. It is recommended to ask first.
